Habits

Thanks to Zen Habits (and other sites), I discovered that the best (only?) way to establish new habits is to:

1. Focus on one habit at a time.
2. Do that habit every day for at least three weeks.

If you try to do too much at once, you fall back into old habits.  They are your actual habits after all.

If you don't do it long enough, the same thing happens.

What I didn't realize is that I did have habits, they just weren't ones that I liked. Before even reading about how to start new habits, I had begun. Spending relaxing mornings at home before going to work.  Commuting by bike. But I wanted to work actively at it.  A new daily habit added every three weeks.

Here's what I have so far, since I started in August 2012:

-Make bed
-Drink water before coffee
-Grind my own coffee
-Eat yogurt, fruit and granola for breakfast
-Ride bike to work
-Spend time outside
-Relax with hot tea or water
-Floss teeth
-Do dishes
-Ten minute clean up in the house
-Put on lotion/wash face
-Be active
-Write in a journal
-Be thankful
-No computer in bed
-Do yoga/stretch
-Learn French

I keep track of all of these habits every day, and do a review at the end of the month.  If these are too much to handle (too many missed days), then I can't add in another habit until I am back on track.
